Christmas in Devon, at Devon Lake Lodges

A winter break in a cosy Devon lodge with your own hot tub – what could be more festive?

Dreaming of a Christmas holiday in Devon this winter? Roadford Lake Lodges Park is a wonderful place to visit in the winter. Peaceful, stunning, cosy, and therapeutic are just some of the words that spring to mind.

Just picture it – a luxury lodge for family or friends, or just the two of you, with your own private patio and hot tub, five easy minutes drive off the A30 and a two-minute walk to the impressive Roadford Lake and friendly café. And a perfect base for exploring Devon and Cornwall. There’s so much to enjoy, and with the roads and rural beauty spots so much quieter than they are in the summer we love these chillier months! You never know you may even get to enjoy a sprinkling of snow on the Tors of Dartmoor National Park!

So what is there to do in this part of Devon in the winter?

Getting out in the Devon countryside

Two of our favourite things are going to special places to enjoy a meal or a drink and beautiful walks in the countryside.

The walking in the area is spectacular. From small leisurely strolls right from the lodges around the shores of beautiful Roadford Lake to walks of all lengths on Dartmoor, we are truly spoiled for choice. Brentor, Meldon Reservoir and Viaduct, Great Links Tor are just a few nearby to consider but we’ve some walking books in the lodges to give you some more ideas.

The lodge park is dog friendly for those guests who bring their four-legged friends with them and the park has its own dog wash so muddy paws can have a good rinse. Here are a few ideas for walking and cycling from Roadford Lake in this part of Devon

Our guest comments say it all!

“…such a perfect location and setting!”

“10/10 experience, would totally recommend to everyone”

“…From walking around the lake, enjoying our cream tea, relaxing in the hot tub, eating our meals around the spacious dining table, exploring the coast. Its been a short but full weekend and we would definitely recommend staying here…”

“…We shall miss the views and location. Looking forward to returning again!”

“…What a place!”

“Perfect in every way. We loved the lodge, the site and the location. Already planning our next visit.”

This Christmas they are lighting up their farm barn and creating a Winter Wonderland where their elves are working hard to make a magical Christmas. A few nearby places less than an hour away from our Roadford Lake lodges this Christmas are:

Historic Market Towns

The nearby historic towns of Okehampton, Tavistock and Launceston are so good to explore with their variety of shops and places to eat. Tavistock’s ancient and vibrant Pannier market is worth a particular mention, especially at this festive time of year, and open Tuesday to Saturday 9am until 4pm.

Exeter with its Northcott Theatre showing Dick Whittington, The inspiring RAMM museum and art gallery, their shops and much more. The city’s Christmas market runs up to 17th December.

Bodmin Jail is a most unusual place to visit where they put a great deal of effort into providing a creative and entertaining experience. Just south of Launceston, they have transformed their historic Jail courtyard into a winter wonderland and ‘Frost Fair’ – a Christmas market with alpine huts selling handmade gifts and seasonal treats. Free entry and open every day from December 8th – December 24th, Weekdays: 2 PM – 8 PM – Weekends: 11 AM – 7 PM. As well as their market there is a Santa’s Grotto, Carols in the courtyard (December 8th 7-8 pm), various award-winning tours of the Jail including a seasonal “festive jaunt through the Victorian period” with a focus on Christmas crimes and criminals! Stately Homes

Castle Drogo and Cothele House are both amazing National Trust properties to visit during the Festive season. With Christmas trails, cosy cafes, choirs and house decorations that have to be seen to be believed we highly recommend a visit to either, preferably both!

Cothele’s spectacular 60-foot flower garland is really awesome and can be viewed daily until Sunday 7 January, 10.30 am-4 pm. (Closed 25-26 December)
