With our central location, you’re also just a comfortable day trip away from the stunning beaches of both North Devon and Cornwall. Roadford Lake on your doorstep
If you enjoy walking, firstly we have spectacular Roadford Lake, right on your doorstep. The lake is one of the biggest inland waterways in Devon surrounded by unspoiled woodland walkways and cycle paths as well as fishing spots. Perfect for exploring with children of all ages.
There are lots of level paths around Roadford Lake for a good jog, a light stroll or just to blow away the cobwebs. Or enjoy the dedicated cycle paths for a family bike trip.

Just 2 minutes’ walk to Roadford Café
The welcoming Roadford Lake café is also just two minutes’ walk from the lodges. It serves customers from breakfast til late afternoon – a comfortable, relaxed space with delicious food, treats and drinks all ultra-convenient and very friendly to doggie friends too! Don’t forget lodge guests also get a discount on all food!
Children’s play area
Next to the Roadford café is a beautiful, biodiverse outdoor play area featuring a timber play tower, rope bridge, swings and slides, incorporating an orchard planted in 2015 as an area for picnics and den building. It’s a most welcome feature for parents of younger children looking for (free) things to do and right next to the café!
Book Water sports at Roadford Lake Activity Centre
The lake’s Activity centre offers rental (or launch) of kayaks, paddleboards, sailing boats and more – a wonderful chance to have some fun on the water. The Activity Centre is still open in October but do check their opening times for details. Keep active during the half-term
There are lots of level paths around Roadford Lake for a good jog, a light stroll or to blow away the cobwebs. Enjoy the dedicated cycle paths for a family trip out on bikes. The park also boasts a popular well-equipped gym for those wanting to keep up their fitness or training whilst on half-term. The gym is free for all guests, open daily from 8 am – 7 pm.
Lots of family-friendly, dog-friendly walks for outdoor fun
We are proud to offer dog-friendly lodge holidays in Devon like many of you we appreciate you may not want to leave your precious pup at home! There are many walks and cycling paths around the lake as well as a dedicated fenced area where dogs can be exercised off the lead. Go to the cafe car park, and on the second level, you will see a gate into a fenced area with a dog bin next, where dogs are free to roam. So there’s no reason to leave your four-legged friend behind on your half-term break in Devon! Snowdrop and Heron lodges uniquely offer enclosed patios which can make your stay even more relaxing!
Dartmoor National Park
With Dartmoor National Park just 10 minutes’ drive you’ve easy access to some of the most beautiful walks we know – and it’s absolutely free. Nearby walks, among many, include the spectacular 4.5-mile circuit taking in Meldon Reservoir and its impressive Viaduct a wrought iron railway bridge built in 1874 36m above the river. Or stunning Widgery Cross accessed from the moor car park just up the lane from the highly recommended Dartmoor Inn at Lydford. Or scamper up to the top of dramatic Brentor with its iconic 12th Century St Michael’s Church on top – a short but steep walk and an inspiring spot to reach with spectacular views.
There are tons of other wonderful walks on our walking and cycling page. We’ve some good walking books in the lodges for people to plan a great day on the moor that would suit you and your group. If you want a bit of support to adventure out you can always book a guided walk with one of the fabulous and knowledgeable local guides such as ‘Dartmoor’s Daughter’.

Dingles Fun Park
An exciting new indoor, family-friendly, amusement park opens in the February half-term of 2025. Dingles Fun Park is replacing what was Dingles Fairground Museum at Milford just a 5-minute drive over the A30 from Roadford Lake Lodges Park, Milford, Lifton, PL16 0AT.
Dingles Fun Park will mostly be an indoor attraction with various family-friendly fairground rides like the Dodgems and the Waltzers and The Carousel Café with some outdoor and indoor seating.
Dingles Fun Park will be open every day throughout the February half-term and then every Saturday and Sunday before Easter from 11 am to 7 pm. Opening hour updates will be posted on its website. More rides and a soft play area are planned for the near future.
Strawberry Fields Farm Shop & Cafe
Only 10 minutes down the A30 Strawberry Fields farm shop, restaurant and café is a must to visit. It offers lots of family fun planned with their annual Pumpkin Fest, from pumpkin picking in their 12 acre patch, Magic Martin entertaining, their maize maze and the introduction of brand new ‘Pumpkin Nights’! As well as their really impressive farm shop packed full of delicious and unusual goodies and its superb restaurant/café they offer plenty of free parking, great fun and some superb photo opportunities too!
Castle Drogo
Join the ‘Magic & Myth’ half-term trail around the National Trust’s castle’s gardens featuring local myths and legends and then show off your magical flourishes with magic tricks inside the castle!

A walk at the National Trust’s Lydford Gorge takes you into a temperate rainforest, past cascading waterfalls and fascinating rock formations.
Lydford Gorge Alpacas
If you are visiting Lydford Gorge and waterfall Lydford Gorge Alpacas are right next door. They offer 3 packages, Picnic with the Pacase, Alpaca Encounter and for those over 12 yrs, Alpaca Trekking, enjoy a real ‘experience’ getting up close with their friendly alpaca team. The Alpaca ‘boys’ – alpaca boys – Batman, Joker, Bubbles, Barney, Penfold, Macca, Mr Sharps, Jasper, Clifton, Ocado, Tucker and Mr T – are “waiting to give you a warm Devon welcome”
Riding on Dartmoor
Open for October half-term, Cholwell is one of the best and friendly riding stables nearby, on the road to the thriving market town of Tavistock. They are open all year round and offer a number of rides each day. Their pony rides are tailor-made to cater for all ages and abilities of riders so that everyone is catered for. If you want to ride during half-term it’s well worth booking early as they are very popular!
Tree surfing at Tamar Trails
Open every day from dawn til dusk Tamar Trails is less than half an hour away, where you can immerse yourselves in the fresh air, wonderful scenery and activities that the site has to offer. Take or hire bikes, enjoy some ‘tree surfing’ or their cycling and walking trails. Along with their café, there is something for everyone. Highly recommended.
Bodmin Jail
From the crimes to the courthouse and gallows to the grave, Bodmin Jail provides a unique opportunity to get up close to the Georgians and the Victorians. From arsenic poisoners to arsonists, murderers to mutinous hanging crowds, Bodmin Jail’s Guided Heritage Tour is one of our most popular tours, steeped in history and suitable for the whole family. Treguddick Distillery
The Treguddick Distillery is holding their Oktoberfest this half term! On Friday, October 18 they will serve up some of their “finest brews” with a “feast of sizzling sausages topped with sauerkraut, sweet desserts and much more for all to enjoy”. In the evening there will be all sorts of Oktoberfest fun too with people encouraged to dress up and get involved. Happy hour 4pm till 6pm. So if you’re a beer lover or just looking for some fun why not pop down to Treguddick less than 20 minutes down the A30!

Tamar Trails
And this half term (from 26th October to 3rd November) you can enjoy their fun Halloween Trail. Follow spooky clues through the woods and answer the quiz questions as you go, spot haunting figures and scary sights as you go. The main Halloween Trail is an adventurous trail through the haunted forest on rough tracks, not suitable for bikes or buggies. There is a shorter option for little legs and buggies, which is about 1km long and much flatter.
Half-term adventures further afield
Our Devon Lake Lodges are central to so many things to do with children. As well as on the doorstep, there is a lot more happening a little further away but less than an hour’s drive from the lodges for great half-term entertainment – from the fascinating and famous Dartmoor Zoo to the hugely inspirational Eden Project Each with a fun-filled agenda of Halloween half term activities lined up for families.
Alternatively, there are the historic nearby towns of Okehampton, Tavistock and Launceston to explore as well as the Ocean city of Plymouth with its Theatre Royal, the beautiful Barbican and famous National Marine Aquarium, and Exeter has the Northcott Theatre, inspiring RAMM museum and art gallery, their shops and much more.
If you want to fill your lungs with some salty air, don’t forget we are close to some of the most stunning beaches in North Devon and Cornwall less than an hour’s drive so an easy day trip rock pooling, walking or even an autumn surf trip whilst the sea temperature are warm!
