Suggestions from our previous guests

Our guest reviews frequently mention some of the places they’ve enjoyed whilst staying in our lodges.

Rachel, Michelle, Abi and Mia loved Bodmin Jail

“We had an amazing stay…we will certainly be back. We recommend a visit to Bodmin Jail and the Blue Lion for tea”

The Catlin family had lots of suggestions

“Excellent lodge – great facilities…could not ask for more, loved the hot tub, very dog friendly. Used as a base to visit places such as

  • Westward Ho – old memories
  • Bude – dog friendly beach
  • Boscastle – very enjoyable little bay and harbour
  • Looe – very busy
  • Polpero – lovely harbour (sitting on the roof terrace at the 3 Pilchards)

If you want reasonable food try the Clovelly Inn in Bratton Clovelly £120 for 5 people – starters, mains, desserts & drinks! Launceston Gold Club works out around £60 for 3 people. Pity not closer to home would love to come on a weekend break.“

The Harrisons from Essex left a suggestion for Hidden Valley

“We had a great stay. The best-equipped lodge we have ever stayed in. Immaculately clean too.

We have experienced some great days out at Dingles, the Hidden Valley and the kids had a great day out doing SUP and sailing. …Thanks a million for the memories.”

Whilst the Thomas family from Hampshire loved the walking and our gym

“Fantastic lodge used as a base for revisiting some Devon and Cornwall memories with now teenagers. Well equipped lodge with homely feel where each evening was spent playing board games. Hot tub greatly appreciated after days out walking and using the gym!”

Roadford Lake play park in the Spring

 Roadford Lake on your doorstep

Firstly and most obviously there is the spectacular Roadford Lake, right on your doorstep. The lake is one of the biggest inland waterways in Devon surrounded by unspoiled woodland walkways and cycle paths as well as fishing spots. Perfect for exploring with children of all ages. Download a free Activity Sheet and bring it with you to start your lakeside adventures.

Nextdoor to Roadford Café

The wonderful Roadford Lake café and Venue is also just two minutes’ walk from the lodges, which serves customers from breakfast til late afternoon – a comfortable, relaxed space with delicious food, treats and drinks all ultra-convenient and very welcome!

Children’s play area

Next to the Roadford café is the inclusive play area featuring a timber play tower, rope bridge, swings and slides, incorporating an orchard planted in 2015 as an area for shade and picnics and den building. Grass areas have been sown with a native wildflower and grass mix and native trees have been planted to increase the biodiversity of the play space. It’s a most welcome feature for parents of younger children looking for (free) things to do and right next to the café!

Water sports at Roadford Lake Activity Centre

The lake’s Activity centre offers rental (or launch) of kayaks, paddleboards, sailing boats and more – a wonderful chance to have some fun on the water. The Activity Centre is still open in October but do check their opening times for details. They also offer a discount to all guests staying at our lodges, Contact us and we will let you know the code!

Lots of dog walks

We welcome dogs at our Devon lodges – like many of you we appreciate you may not want to leave your precious pup at home! There are many walks and cycling paths around the lake as well as a dedicated fenced area where dogs can be exercised off the lead. Go to the cafe car park, and on the second level, you will see a gate into a fenced area with a dog bin next, where dogs are free to roam. So there’s no reason to leave your four-legged friend behind on your half-term break in Devon!

Keep active during the half-term

There are lots of level paths around Roadford Lake for a good jog, a light stroll or to blow away the cobwebs. Enjoy the dedicated cycle paths for a family trip out on bikes. The park also boasts a fantastically well-equipped gym for those wanting to keep up their fitness or training whilst on half-term. The gym is free for all guests, open daily from 8 am – 7 pm.

Views across Dartmoor with blue sky

Dartmoor National Park for family walks at half-term

With Dartmoor National Park just 10 minutes’ drive you’ve easy access to some of the most beautiful walks we know – and it’s absolutely free. Nearby walks, among many, include the spectacular 4.5-mile circuit taking in Meldon Reservoir and its impressive Viaduct a wrought iron railway bridge built in 1874 36m above the river. Or stunning Widgery Cross accessed from the moor car park just up the lane from the highly recommended Dartmoor Inn at Lydford. Or scamper up to the top of dramatic Brentor with its iconic 12th Century St Michael’s Church on top – a short but steep walk and an inspiring spot to reach with spectacular views.

There are countless other wonderful walks on our walking and cycling page. We’ve some good walking books in the lodges for people to plan a great day on the moor that would suit you and your group.  If you want a bit of support to adventure out you can always book a guided walk with one of the fabulous and knowledgeable local guides such as ‘Dartmoor’s Daughter’.

Something a bit different for half-term?

Below are some great tried and tested other things we recomend, but don’t forget to book as they will be busy!

Family cycling in the woods in Devon

Half-term cycling adventures

If you prefer not to pile your car high with bikes this half-term, you can hire cycles and other equipment at a number of outlets in Princetown or Okehampton or even nearer Devon Cycle Hire just 10 minutes from the lodges at Sourton. Enjoy cycling some safe and spectacular cycling routes on Dartmoor. Follow the link which will help guide you to some wonderful routes including the ‘The Granite and Gears’ Princetown Railway route or the Granite Way even nearer the lodges. The Granite Way is an 11-mile easy track stretching from Okehampton to Lydford for cyclists and walkers. Park at the Pump and Pedal café and cycle shop at Sourton and enjoy the ride taking in some truly spectacular scenery enjoying lunch at the picturesque Castle Inn at Lydford or friendly Bearslake Inn at Lake or a hot pasty at the Pump and Pedal on the way or at the end of your ride.

Pirate Maize Maze

Pirate Maize Maze and Pumkin Fest

We can’t stress enough our recommendation to visit the Strawberry Fields farm shop, just 10 minutes’ drive west down the A30 this half term. It is so much more than a shop! This half term they are holding their infamous Pumpkin Fest – pumpkin picking in their 12-acre patch with thousands of pumpkins of different colours, sizes and shapes, a Pirate maize maze with treasure hidden within, some brilliant scarecrows and much more entertainment and family fun! It will really get you in the mood for Halloween! As well as their really impressive farm shop packed full of delicious and unusual goodies and it’s superb restaurant/café they have a half term take away with tempting burgers, pasties, pizza, hot chocolate and other convenient Halloween treats! Strawberry Fields offers plenty of free parking, great fun and some superb photo opportunities too!

Soft play area for children

Trethorne Leisure Park

If you’ve young kids and looking for something to entertain them in all weathers Trethorne Leisure Park is well worth a mention too. Just 11 miles straight down the A30 it offers a fun-filled day for younger children. Open Thursday to Sunday over half term, it’s a great place to visit if you’re looking for good entertainment for the kids with plenty of indoor areas as well as outdoor fun.

More half-term adventures further afield

As well as on the doorstep, there is a lot more happening a little further away but less than an hour’s drive from the lodges for great half-term entertainment – from the fascinating and famous Dartmoor Zoo to the hugely inspirational Eden Project Each with a fun-filled agenda of Halloween half term activities lined up for families.

Alternatively, there are the historic nearby towns of Okehampton, Tavistock and Launceston to explore as well as the city of Plymouth with its Theatre Royal, its beautiful Barbican and famous National Marine Aquarium, and Exeter with its Northcott Theatre, inspiring RAMM museum and art gallery, their shops and much more.

And before we go, we need to mention again that some of the most stunning beaches in North Devon and Cornwall are less than an hour’s drive so an easy day trip rock pooling, walking or even an autumn surf trip whilst the sea temperature is relatively warm!

These are just some of the many reasons we love to use our Roadford Lake Lodges as a base during a precious October break! And each day come home to your cosy lodge, with plenty of space for everyone, enjoy the hot tub, the free on-site park gym, a board game by the fire, a delicious family meal together or just cuddle up on the comfortable sofas and watch a film. Happy half-term.
