Roadford Lake is open all year round, so it depends on what you are looking for in a Devon Lodge Holiday. Did you know that spending time on or near ‘blue space’ can have a hugely positive impact on your health and well-being?

Enjoy Spring at Roadford Lake

After the cold days of winter, it’s simply stunning, with dew-covered cobwebs suspended from fresh green grass and lime green leaves emerging from the trees after their winter rest. It’s a wonderful location to watch the birds and listen to their birdsong as you walk in the crisp spring air or shelter in the lake’s bird hides. Take in the spectacular flowers blooming around the lake, daffodils, snowdrops, primroses, bluebells, wild garlic, wood forget-me-not and cuckooflowers. Children can enjoy the frogspawn in the ponds and around the lake shoreline. The café and water sport activity centre is open all year round for sailors, paddleboarders and fishermen with special activities during Easter.

If you are interested in photography there are plenty of opportunities to capture striking photos around the lake with panoramic views and wildlife opportunities. As you are staying at a Roadford lodge, you can beat the day visitors for an early morning shot of the mist rising from the lake, or perhaps a winning sunset.

Enjoy Autumn at Roadford

If you are staying at one of our Roadford Lake Lodges in the autumn, you might coincide with the Dormouse surveys, a rare and protected mammal native to the UK. Despite becoming locally extinct in some places throughout the UK, the species is present at Roadford. Dormouse surveys are carried out at Roadford in May and September, and spaces are available to attend if you book ahead. Enjoy the dark skies of Roadford, the perfect place to stargaze in the crisp autumnal air.

Children can enjoy things to do at Halloween, picking their pumpkins at nearby Strawberry Fields, ghostly walks at Tamar Trails, Halloweden at the Eden Project, to name but a few.

Enjoy Winter at Roadford Lake

The move into the cold and wet winter months sees some of the wildlife around Roadford Lake go into hibernation, gone are the bats, dormice and an array of moths and butterfly species. However, Roadford is still bursting with wildlife to spot throughout the winter season.

The birds that live around our lakes are a huge part of sightings in the winter, and they come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Hundreds of birds and winter visitors can be spotted. The grey heron, featured as our logo is a regular, but despite its size can be tricky to spot. These herons do not migrate and can be seen at any time of year – often in shallow water or in vegetation looking for food.

Christmas at Roadford is slow-paced and relaxed. The lodges have ample space to spend the festive season with your family, or why not hire all three lodges and share Christmas with your friends as well? With the towns of Okehampton, Launceston and Tavistock all just a short drive away, as well as all the nearby attractions offering a huge variety of festive events there is plenty to do, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet. After you have walked off the Christmas meal, sit back and relax under the stars in the hot tub with a glass (we provide plastic ones!) of mulled wine.
